Tragedy associates with fate. Human life is more acceptable in a state of praise, triumph, success and abundance rather than lack , loneliness, depression , helplessness and cracks . In the Christian tradition, in-depth discussion about life fair where people actually live without pain, grief actually appeals strongly in the discussion of the prophets as seen in the story laments half debate between Job and his friends.

In an afternoon when I was in Yogya, I received a telephone from a grassroots activist friend who wanted to meet with me.  She came to visit me and finally we talked for long hours till evening at my house.  As a Muslim, my friend  journey reflects the life as a prophet, the prophet Job shown . I was a bit surprised during the talk she referred many times to the prophet of Job.  I thought that the story of Job is only keept within  the Christian and Jewish traditions, in fact I was wrong, it is also a story which is very close to the  the Islamic tradition. Human suffering is reflected deeply within Abrahamic traditions!  My friend believes that her problems are part of the test that God will not leave her if she continues to struggle in the near surrender to God's grace alone. My friend is a strong professional whose work has remarkable due to her success stories of defending many women workers in Yogyakarta. After our long discussion, I began to realize that we both are using the same faith experience in interpreting the struggles faced by humans.

Job sued to God for everything that happens especially with his lives that were destroyed or removed by God. Suffering occurs because all that close to Ayub are taken from him. But himself, Job still conversing with God apparently, was infested with continued fears about the disaster that continues to come to his own spirit actually cannot be avoided from the pursuit of God's judgment.  Reading the Book of Job as heard complaints about a demoslishment of life little by little speaks deeply to me.

Job's story is different with the story of Jacob who faces tragedy that is directly related to himself. Jacob never became limp in his struggle to understand the meaning of God. When Jacob began to understand it, he then set up the altar to God.

So there are two kinds of people are dealing with the disaster, those who survived him but is helpless because all around it were destroyed, the second, is that they themselves are affected places. My accident because of the crash of our car in the high way number 101 in the Ventura County, Southern California was similar to the story of Jacob. Both the story of Job and Jacob show that humans prepare himself in proximity to the Creator. Human beings looks at the signs that came to him to understand the purpose of her or his journey ahead .

I also did the same thing about why we had an accident when we had travelled on cars safely around around the United States. The question why the accident occurred there, in Southern California, in Ventura place is already very close to the goal we got the place we were going to.

This picture shows our preparation for presenting the Festival of Papua during my art exibition at Bentara Budaya Yogya in May 21-29 2013. At the time I dislocated my right elbow.

Six months later in the USA, I had a car accident that brought me to live at the home of Papua in Santa Barbara, California

On the other posts I described the connection between the suffering that I have experienced is nothing compared to the suffering my sisters and brothers in the land of Papua. With the eyes of faith I see the relationship between this accident that brought us to stay at the home of Papua which is the house of Charles and Katherine Farhardian. Only fews hours later while staying at the house,  I know more depth about the plight of my brothers and sisters in Papua. Especially the time when I read the book titled The Testimony Project Papua which edited by Charles Farhardian.

After more than a year to work directly
with the community in Indonesia on the issues of justice, prosperity and peace in Papua,  I know that my presence in the Papua home in Santa Barbara was a very important moment . Throughout my role as the moderator of Petisi Warganegara NKRI untuk Papua along with Nano Apituley, I have never given the slightest chance to listen to the depth voices of Papua that need to be shared to the Indonesian people at large.

Petisi Warganegara NKRI untuk Papua is a virtual world movement that aims to build awareness with fellow citizens about the situation in Papua. The goal is to ask the Indonesian government to remove Papua of the militarization’s target. Also to encourage our government to reevaluate the regulation which has defined equately between a terrorist with those who protest against the injustices in their homeland of Papua.  Petisi Warganegara NKRI untuk Papua encourages the government to be fair in establishing the correct definition so as not intentionally trapping,   punishing and intimidating  Papuans based on the Law National Security Act.

Shar
ing information and analysis on Petisi Warganegara NKRI untuk Papua to  the fellow citizens  of Indonesia, I have written and simultaneously collected those writings in the form of a book titled Petisi Warganegara NKRI untuk Papua (see Adeney-Risakotta, May 2013). Analysis of the data is built based on the primary and secondary to drive the conclusion that the space for the participation of indigenous people ( Orang Asli Papua ) in managing their own development in the region is still very limited . Development became a symbol of suppression and exploitation of the OAP than expediency is felt equally by all citizens of the Republic of Indonesia in Papua. Compared with the abundant natural resources in Papua,  OAP living in a state of concern.

Movement to build mutual awareness among Papuans against the injustice that is happening in Papua always end on subversion charges presented by the government of Indonesia to the OAP leaders who dared to question the rule of injustice and the elimination of the military in Papua. Papuan leaders are authoritative to be killed to remove traces of OAP force capable of building area based on cultural values and religious bonds. Portrait of a failed development in Papua which is more advantageous entrants, the elite and the central government than the OAP who are in rural areas, valleys , coastlines throughout Papua land, is being moved into a feud between the Republic of Indonesia with the rebels. Indonesian government has declared war on the citizens of the Republic of Indonesia known as OPM or KNPB or SATGAS Papua.

Father Neles Tebay in his book titled  Jakarta - Papua dialogue , A Papuan Perspective , published in 2011 underlines the importance of the dialogue carried on between the government center with various groups in Papua. Among the group are those who call themselves the Free Papua Movement (OPM) or the National Committee of West Papua (KNPB). The dialogue process should begin to recall the events of violence against citizens of NKRI such as the native of Papua (OAP) as ongoing. Violence perpetrated by the military to OAP critical as the current ongoing when the OAP university students rejected the draft of Special Autonomy Law Plus (RUU Otsus Plus) is being deliberated by the Central government to use the power of local governments and a handful of intellectuals at the university of Cendrawasih in Jayapura.

Legal instruments that have been defined to be an autonomous region of Papua through the Special Autonomy Law No. 21 of 2001 and its amendments issued through Act 35 of 2008 provides special autonomous management policies divided the provinces of Papua and West Papua .

In the journey  it turns out the human resource capacity and systems in Papua has not worked up to provide space for participation of grassroots communities in various districts to be involved in producing local laws that protect the rights of social , cultural , economic and political as it was intended in OAP Special Autonomy themselves.

Evaluation and recommendation of the OAP special autonomy is not really addressing the failure of Special Autonomy in the statement but the pressure for an immediate dialogue between Jakarta and Papua. Jakarta demands dialogue - dialogue between the People of Papua or Papua and the central government is the result of an official recommendation at a hearing in order to evaluate the Special Autonomy (Autonomy ) Papua conducted on Thursday through Saturday from date of July 25 to 27 2013.

In a hearing that all the representatives present OAP there were seven indigenous territories of Papua that they presented at the meeting, namely indigenous territories Mamta / Tabi , Saireri , Domberai , Bomberai , Anim Ha , La Pago , and Mee Pago . The hearing was facilitated by the Papuan People's Assembly ( MRP ) of the provinces of Papua and West Papua . Outside the of seven lines, is also presented representatives from 40 Districts within provinces of Papua and West Papua . According to news from Tabloid Jubi, each representative was given agreements to convey the results of the evaluation at the district level based on 280 common questions that made and distributed by MRP in June 2013.

The hearing also distinguish between several aspects which are then translated wrongly by the local government and central government , namely that a hearing to evaluate the Special Autonomy Law on Papua  (refering to UU 21 Tahun 2001) was not intended to provide legitimacy to the plan of the Special Autonomy Law Plus or Papuan Government Act . Conclusion of a hearing which brought together representatives Papuan People associated with the implementation and bureucract performance of government at the central level Papua , West Papua , all district and cities declared a failure does not automatically provide the basis for changes in legislation as it is being championed by the Governor related the design of the Special Autonomy Plus Law.

Chairman of the Hearing Committee, James Dumupa read the general view that meeting resulted in two recommendations , namely :
1 . Open space for dialogue between Papuans and the Central Government is mediated by a neutral party and held a neutral place.
2 . Law No.21/2001 as amended by Law No.35/2008 on Special Autonomy for Papua and West Papua reconstructed after stage called Jakarta - Papua dialogue.

To prepare for the demands of representation carrying on the dialogue between Jakarta – Papua, then I as a moderator of Petisi Warganegara NKRI untuk Papua r will release continued articles on Papuan leaders who had been excluded from negotiations because they are regarded as OPM or KNPB. Writing about them will be released in a separate note.

Happy reading and salam amalulukee

Dear families and friends of FB

Good morning and salam damai for you all. May God mercy be with us all. Amen

I would like to thank you all for your prayers to us. Every word you sent to us have strengthened us spirit as people who are created by God to whom our life are opened to thanksgiving and salvation. Among the letters are those who have followed our trip since we left Indonesia last June up to now.  I could not mention one by one because you all are very special for me. Friends from Europe, US, all over Indonesia have sent your supported words to me, posting in my timeline and also sent to my messages.  I will try send my comment little by little. But for now, here is my news for you all.

Today is the fourth day after I got out from hospital in Ventura, California and the second day after our arrival back in Boston. Within fourth days so many things have happened in my life. God have protected us and still want to continue working with us if we think about the tremendous accident happened last week in the night of November's the fourth.

We had travelled across American territoryies  with care but the night of tragedy was only in second our life has become differently. We also just finished our 10 days around northern part of New Mexico with lots of stories. We got into four seasons in the two weeks ago trip around New Mexico.

But in last California trip from Pasadena to Santa Barbara, I was in the depth sleep when the accident happened. Usually I talked with pak Bernie while he drove but if I could not open my eyes Pak Bernie allowed me to sleep while he continued driving. We both were tired. Pak Bernie had 9 hours classes which were all graduated classes, master and PhD ones and meetings, while I taught two hours and some business meeting together with him at the last day at Fuller Theological Seminary.  The day before the accident we were involved with some activities at Presbyterian church in Redlands. We both also preached. We decided to leave LA directly to Santa Barbara at the night after our class finished which given at Prof. Roberta King's graduated seminar.  The next week in the morning we had to give some lecturers for students at Westmont College. Thank God, pak Bernie could continue giving the lectures while I was in the hospital and at home.

Everything change very dramatically, but I feel thankfulness in my heart. I did not remember everything from the accident except pak Bernie touched my hand and said: "Honey we have to get out from the car because there is fire under it". Then pak Bernie unlocked my seat belt and  I walked out myself to approach two young men who were waiting outside. These two men are handsome and kind. They waited for us until police, fireman and ambulance arrived. Besides calling all emergency relief to arrive, they looked for a bottle of water to give for me. I was calm to see what was happening with us. Later after pak Bernie went to the towed agency which took our rental car to get our two suitcases which were at the trunk. After the accident the trunk could not be opened. What happened we could learn from was the airbag was not opened while pak Bernie blew out to save him from any injure. But I was in the depth sleep so I did not have any feeling of trauma. I think I was slept in God's hand.

the front car

the back car

I did not know what was happened during the accident. I went to the hospital with half of my head swollen but the results of CT Scans show clean on all my head and brain. My pancreas was suspected to have blooding and doctors began to prepare for a surgeon  to me but after rechecking my volume of blood which was fine, the conclusion was I did not need any operation, the blooding that came the begin had to stop.

In Christian tradition, suffering of life is a part of God's mercy for human beings to live in God's ways as we believe in the salvation that has given to us in Christ.

Just before we left our friend’s home, Charles and Katherine Farhardian whom welcomed us to stay with them after the accident, I wrote my reflection that was titled Breaking bones for the life of Papua. Charles Farhardian is a professor at Westmont College which invited us to give series of lectures during the week of world's awareness on interfaith activism at the school. The dates were chosen specifically by the school. Farhardian has done many researches on Papua.

One day of our stay with them, Farhardian gave his book titled of The Testimony Project Papua which I read only the first story on the night before I felt sleep. The next morning I walked up with the new spirit that strengthens my understanding on the meaning of this accident. Even taking the entire days almost 12 hours, I tried finishing my refection which now can be found in Indonesian and English version on my blogs. While training myself for the coming of a long flight trip wearing brace, I also tried writing out my story.

Breaking bones for the life of Papua. A story from Home of Papua in Santa Barbara, California

(English)

Breaking bones for the life of Papua
A story from Home of Papua in Santa Barbara, California

By Farsijana Adeney-Risakotta

I am writing this story from Santa Barbara in the
room of Papua by which  our friends , Charles and Katherine Farhardian have called the bedroom at their warm and loving home where we have lived during our recovery from the car accident . We were invited by Westmont College to give  series of lectures during the week of awareness of interfaith activism at the school this week.. They had prepared the best hotels in Santa Barbara for our stay there , ie Mentecito Inn where we did stayed during our visiting to Westmont College in 2006 for the same purposes. But now we decided to stay in their homes as I was recovering after saying several days at the hospital while pak Bernie who was safe of the accident could continue to deliver our commitment to give the lectures on peace and reconciliation in Indonesians among Moslem and Christians and other world religions.

I actually had to wait to write this letter to my family and my friends in Indonesia , in the United States and everywhere . When I was in the hospital Ventura County Medical Center,
Pak Bernie has been communicating with the family and the Presbyterian Church in Louisville, which have supported our work in Indonesia. Church leaders have written letters, called to show their sympathy and conformt to us . Yesterday at late afternoon I spoke with Pastor of First Presbyterian Merry Ellen Berkeley, California who called to strengthen my faith. I also had replied the message posted by Kurnia Widiastuti, ICRS Yogya student who sent an email with attachment documents related to two papers that will be eximened  at ICRS comprehensive exam in Yogyakarta . I replied to her message news that I could not read the document because I just got out of the hospital after a car accident that was outcontrolled by my husband, pak Bernie. Nia Bu Widiastuti then spreaded out my short message to the network of ICRS Yogya . Friends called pak Bernie and wrote  words of support to shere therir sympathy.

Now I have decided to write a short note to all my friends because every trip we go nowhere as long as I have a smartphone, I have posed them on Facebook. I can sit for 30 minutes but had to immediately get up to rotate the inside home because I have wore a shield to cover the entire of my upper body.  The strong power to write comes mainly this morning when I woke up. I realized that my life really is nothing comparing to the Papua whose lives have lost because of the deaths occurred among them, the native of Papua in their own land of  Papua . Before going to bed last night I read the book titled The Testimony Project Papua which was edited by Charles Farhardian . Very difficult to read with a book holding at my right hand as flat as my body which only in the head a thin pillow can be put to strengthen my back bone.  There are two backbone which were cracked on my body, the first called T 11, which means almost the lowest part of the thoracic part of the spine and the second is called L 4 which is the abbreviation of the lumbar spine .

For clarity I omit information from wikipedia <Human Vertebral Colum>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human-_vertebral_column

or
can be read on the Post Accident thoraco - lumbar Spinal Disc Injuries T 11 - L 4

Until now in my left hand
have the laminating hospital bracelet which has my name including the time when I brought to hospital Ventura County Medical Center which is the trauma center at 23:12 AM on November 4, 2013. Our rental car driven by Bernie crashed at 10 PM since we left the class of Roberta King at Fuller Theological Seminary which was about the music of peace that brought together Christians and Muslims to engage in peace making in Indonesia. Several years ago , Roberta King conducted a workshop on Islam and Christianity for peace through music and song collaborated with ICRS Yogya.

Please see information about Song of Peace

On
the day of Monday, on the busy day, because of several leadership meetings with the Dean of the Faculty of Theology  and Interculture Studies of Fuller Theological Seminary, Pak Bernie had to deliver some lectures for the S3 and S2 as well. In the condition when we were so tired we decided to drive to Santa Barbara, because the next morning we had to give a lecture at Westmont College . And that night , an accident occurred . Our car hit the road divided at high way then spinning to rol destroying the roof before the car flipped and  rolled, landed on the wheels and then swung around in a full circle before crashing into a wall on the right side of the road.

I did  not remember anything unless told pak  Bernie told me the story of how the car came into an accident. I was in the dept of my sleep.  I was awakened by the voice of pak Bernie while pulled my hand out to say: " Honey we have to get out because there is a fire under our car" . Pak Bernie helped me out from  sit belt then asked where his glasses were . I showed the glasses that exist under the driver's seat which actually were my own glasses. So pak Bernie left our car without his glasses.

We
were companied by two young men who stopped to help us out from the danger we had faced due to the accident and the was the flume of fire with dropping gasoline under the front part of the car. They also called up the Police , Fireman and Ambulance.  They also gave me a bottle of water when I asked from them.  No other accidents due to road deserted to happen on us. Police checked carefully pak Bernie and no question for him anymore because they concluded that the human errors like tireness and sleepy might effect to the car’s accident . Thanks be to God , when the car was paid at LAX pak. Bernie asked whether he could pay with the Citibank card that gives car insurance to be included in the rental policy. Both the repairing of the car and my hosptital are being covered by insurances. Doctor who who the chief of the surgen operation came to me saying that they do not have a cure for me after a brace fitted .

Doctors came at 7 pm in November 6, 2013 to say that “You could go home to rest better because we do not have any medicine to cure you because you were healthy as seen in the results of various tests I had to do during my time at the emergency room at the hosptital. Three kinds CTScan rotgen were done and some photos as well as blood tests. The pancreas is an indication of injury from accidental contact is not proven after the blood test .

Doctor visited me to say that I could go home after two days at the hospital

Doctors and therapists are very optimistic about the pace of healing my body because I do not smoke and drink alcohol . They were very grateful that I had the will to train myself ready and after a brace fitted on my body . Benefits of jogging , muscle and yoga exercises that I do every day has heplped me to go through this critical time of my life, the broken bones of my spine.  I have to walk in the upright position as well as in the same position when I use the bathroom . Knee bend should be kept in balance so that my body was not in a state of bowing . My body is very light when I was taken by nurses came into the CT scanner or moved to the bed in the hospital room.

But in this there is a small, a thiny body has the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, who has never left me . My strength is the power of Him . Living disaster and tragedy of eyeglasses faith, I do see the suffering of others whose testimony I never knew until I read about their testimony here at the room of Papua. Now it is suffering , there is a broken bone in me, like a lot of people who have died Papua .

When a therapist come to draw my brace , he had to take the measurement of my body. I laid on the bed with the company of  a nurse and my husband . He took in detail the threshold from which a brace was made . When I was deducted the size I told him that six months ago I took the measurement  of my own  body to create a work of art titled Dancer Justice . The works was exhibited on May 21 to 29 May 2013 in the Bentara Budaya of Yogyakarta. Justice dancer is my artwork which was made of wire .  A Dancer of justice dances with  with glasses on the front and back of both hands . At the front of the position of the heart there are some glasses at the front and back of the body. . At the very bottom of my skirt fringe attach a symbol of peace . Justice dancers had no face , both the front and rear are the same.  Shawl dancers are dancing life uninterrupted wire wave form of justice for all people in the know about her concerns .

Now I'm using a brace.
More information on brace can be found on the article titled "Orthosis" (brace)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphosis

While wrapping my upper body with the brace, I feel like being an acting out the injustice that is being experienced by indigenous people because they are rich in land but their souls deliberately marginalized called off for the life of development and progress . My body is now not only a work of art but the body is cracked and brittle as the body of brothers

I was out from hospital wearing brace

and sisters of Papua who were in pain for long. God was preparing me in Papua home in California to be with them togeher being healed by the Lord Jesus Himself as it says in the Book of Titus 3:5 " God saved us not because of the truth of what we have done , but because of His mercy alone . God saved us by washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit is poured out upon us with incredible kindness through Jesus Christ , our savior.

Tomorrow we return to Boston . Since yesterday I practiced using a brace for 4 hours , today I am grateful I
have used to add up to 7-8 hours in order to travel by plane to Boston. I am thankful because I 've been training myself for a long time on how to breath while using this brace . I implore prayers of family and friends that God blessed the way home and I am strengthened in peace and thanksgiving to the events that happened to me. Both pak Bernie and I thank family and friends for support sympathy to us . Presumably my faith experience can also strengthen us all to remain faithful walk with God in suffering that we face .

With love and prayers
